Four old friends turn fifty-one — the age they jokingly call their own Area 51, after the secret Nevada base where, rumour has it, experiments are run on aliens. Within a year, life runs its own experiment on each of them.
About the project
Area 51 (original title: Zona 51) is a TV mini-series in development — four 40-minute episodes. The showrunner of this dramedy about mid-life crisis is the renowned Basel-based Ukrainian playwright Natalia Blok, and I was attached to direct all four episodes.
In 2020 the project won the development pitch of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. During development we shot a proof-of-concept teaser starring Ukrainian film and TV star Ostap Stupka (Bitter Harvest, Taras Bulba). The project has been on hold since Russia's full-scale invasion.
